CV format for the UAE
What employers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider Gulf usually expect, and where you have a choice.
- One to two pages, most recent job first.
- A photo is common in the Gulf but optional. Follow the job post.
- Put a +971 mobile number and a professional email at the top.
- Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word.
How long should a UAE CV be?
One page is right if you have under about five years of experience. Two pages suit most experienced professionals. A third page rarely helps: recruiters skim, and the first half page decides whether they keep reading.
If you are cutting, remove old or unrelated roles first, then shorten bullets. Keep achievements that show numbers, such as AED budgets managed, team size or growth.
Should you add a photo?
Photos are more common on Gulf CVs than in the US or UK, but they are not required, and practice varies by employer. Large international companies often prefer no photo. Some local employers and recruitment agencies expect one.
If you add one, use a recent, plain-background headshot in professional clothing. No selfies, no group photos. If the job post says no photo, or you are applying through an online system, leave it out. Single-column layouts without a photo are the safest choice for automated screening.
Which personal details to include
Always include your full name, a phone number with country code (+971), an email address and your city. A LinkedIn link helps.
Some Gulf employers also expect nationality and visa status, for example whether you hold a residence visa or are on a visit visa, because it tells them how quickly you can start. Add it when the role or the employer suggests it. Date of birth, marital status and religion are not needed for most roles, so you can skip them unless the application asks.
What goes on the page
Use a clear order: a short summary, work experience (newest first), skills, education, certifications and languages. In the Gulf, listing Arabic and English proficiency is worth a line of its own.
Write bullets that start with a verb and end in a result. "Cut cost per lead by AED 42 through channel reallocation" beats "Responsible for marketing".
Which layout to choose
For online applications, pick a single-column layout such as Classic or Minimal: they are the easiest for applicant tracking systems to read. For emailing a hiring manager or recruiter, a design-led layout such as Two-Tone, Modern or Executive looks more polished, at the cost of being less predictable for software.
Common mistakes
Inconsistent date formats, missing months or years, long paragraphs instead of bullets, key details hidden in tables or images, and a CV in a different language from the job post are the most common mistakes.
Questions
Should I include a photo on a UAE CV?
It is optional. Photos are more accepted in the Gulf than in the US or UK, but many international employers prefer none. Follow the job post, and skip it for online applications.
How long should a CV be in the UAE?
One page with under about five years of experience, two pages for most experienced candidates. Avoid three pages unless you are very senior.
Do I need to state my visa status?
Not always. Some Gulf employers like to see it because it affects your start date. Include it when the role or employer suggests it, and leave it out if you are unsure.
