How to explain a career gap on your CV

Gaps happen: between contracts, after moving country, while caring for family. Here is how to show one without letting it become the story.

Short gaps do not need explaining

A few weeks or months between jobs is normal, especially in the Gulf, where many people finish a contract and travel home before the next one. If you use month and year for every role, a short gap simply shows as a short gap.

Longer gaps: one honest line

For a gap of more than about six months, add an entry in your experience section, with dates, the same way you would list a job. One line is enough:

You do not need to share private details. A clear reason and dates are enough for a recruiter to move on.

Show what you did

If you learned something, freelanced, helped in a family business or volunteered during the gap, add it as a bullet under that entry. It turns a blank space into proof that you kept going.

Coming back after a long break

Lead with your summary. Name the job you want, your experience before the break, and anything recent:

Office administrator with six years of experience in UAE real estate, returning to work after a career break. Recently completed a course in Microsoft 365 and ready to start immediately.

What not to do

If they ask in the interview

Keep it to three parts: what happened, what you did, why you are ready now.

"I finished my contract in June and went home to support my family for a few months. During that time I completed a safety course. I'm back in Dubai now and can start immediately."

Questions

Should I explain a career gap on my CV?

Explain gaps longer than about six months with one line and dates. Shorter gaps usually need no explanation.

How do I write a gap between contracts in the Gulf?

Add a line such as "Returned to home country between contracts" with the dates. It is common and recruiters in the region understand it.

Can I leave the gap out?

You can avoid drawing attention to it, but do not change job dates to hide it. Employers may check.
